While Facebook has been doing a great deal of educational outreach to the 50 million active local businesses on its platform for the past two years, even the smallest updates requires a bit of a learning curve.

Earlier this month, Facebook unveiled some new tools aimed at helping those businesses reach the roughly 900 million Messenger users. So we reached out to Facebook and a representative provided three new ways SMBs can use FB Messenger.

To start, any SMB can use Messenger effectively by enabling messaging on their Page and being responsive to messages they receive from customers.

Here are some of the latest tips for local businesses looking to get the most out Messenger:

Use your Page’s username to connect with customers – Your business’ Page now has a unique username to make it even easier for people to find you on both Facebook and Messenger. Your unique username makes it simple for people to distinguish your business, especially if you have a somewhat similar name to another business.
Connect directly with customers through Messenger with Messenger Links and Codes – You can now share your specific Messenger Link (m.me/username) or Messenger Code with customers to automatically start a conversation through Messenger.
Create a friendly Messenger Greeting for new message threads – When a customer connects with you via Messenger, create a customizable note to let them know what kinds of messages they can expect. Businesses can set and edit its greetings in the Page’s Message Settings.
